2021 Alexander Valley Merlot
2021 Alexander Valley Merlot
The Alexander Valley AVA is a Mediterranean climate with wet, cool winters and arid summers that are tempered by the nearby Pacific Ocean influence. The rocky volcanic soils of the valley are well-drained and characterized by a diverse mineral composition which helps Bordeaux grape tannin profiles thrive.
The results are fruit that achieves a balanced ripeness profile maximizing vibrancy and complexity of flavors.
The 2021 Vintage enjoyed near-perfect growing conditions with warmer-than-usual temperatures and less-than-normal rainfall. Moderate-to-warm daytime temperatures followed by cool evenings allowed the fruit to ripen evenly. These conditions provided excellent acid & flavor development.
This wine has a deep, dark and tempting core of black fruits and oak spices that is surrounded by the velvety, welcoming texture expected from a Merlot. Blackberries, blueberries, toasted wood and cedar bring out complexity on the palate and linger on the finish. This full-flavored Merlot could almost pass for a Cabernet due to its generous tannins, bold black-fruit flavors and satisfying depth. This alluring wine offers further layers of plum, cherry, and raspberry with hints of savory herbs, rustic earthiness and French oak-inspired notes of toffee and cardamom.
Best to drink now through 2030.
