WINEMAKER NOTES
The Phipps Family Cellars 2021 Petaluma Gap Pinot Noir was sourced from the Kendric Vineyard in Marin County. This beautiful hillside vineyard was planted, in 2002, at an elevation of 250’-400’ to the following Clones: Mt. Eden, Pommard & Martini. These clones produce a Pinot Noir with tremendous structure and ageability.
The 2021 Petaluma Gap Pinot Noir was hand harvested in picks between September 9th-15th at ~23 Brix. It was divided into 65% de-stemmed & 35% whole clusters into open-top fermenters with one-third going native-yeast fermentation and two-thirds getting inoculated. The lots were punched down once-to-twice daily and spent 14 days on the skins before being pressed at dryness. This Pinot spent 16 months in 100% French Oak (20% New & 80% Experienced) before being racked once prior to bottling. The wine spent a further 12 months aging in the bottle prior to its release to you.
On the nose, it displays subtle floral notes along with dried cherry, grapefruit, clove, and cinnamon. On the palate, you will find full flavors of cherry, cranberry & raspberry, accompanied by further notes of white pepper, tea & cola. This wine’s finish is lingering with hints of Santa Ana plums, tangy Bing cherries, and a clean & refreshing acidity.
